Why Should I Care About Natural Soap?
This question didn't occur to me until I started looking into it and now I make natural soap for a living, so listen up.
Basically, the world is filling up with shit. The food we eat is filled with shit, the products we used are filled with shit and the people that surround you are mostly full of shit. So when you have the choice between something that is full of shit and something that isn't, why would you voluntarily opt-in to the shitty option?
I hope that was enough "shits" to get the point across, but if that didn't do it, these next points will.
1. Most commercial soaps are probably closer to detergent than they are to traditional soap.
As technology improved and the focus on efficiency became the primary goal of industry, soap manufacturers found ways to synthesise the properties of their ingredients to create imitation ingredients.
For instance, shea butter contains large amounts of stearic and oleic fatty acids which benefit soap by making it both harder and more cleansing. Commercial soap manufacturers create replicas of these acids from their base molecules and use it in their soap, which strips the benefits that come from using the whole product. As well as stearic and oleic fatty acids, shea butter contains oils that benefit your skin, but these benefits are lost when the compounds are broken down into their individual parts.
You may have noticed that a lot of commercial soaps boast about how their soap "Doesn't dry out your skin!". The thing is, if it was made out of decent base ingredients, it wouldn't dry out your skin to begin with.
2. Your skin is porus, it absorbs whatever you put on it.
We are slowly becoming aware of the chemicals that we eat or drink and the effects they have on our bodies, but why don't we put the same emphasis on what we put on our skin?
Most commercial soaps include parabens (linked to breast cancer), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (skin irritant) and a bunch of other chemical preservitives, colours and scents. If you look at the ingredients list of a commercial soap you probably won't be able to pronounce most of the words, let alone know what they are and how they can effect your body. The ingredients list for Urban Swagman products contain things that you have most likely heard of and have probably cooked dinner with.
3. You deserve better.
Seriously, you do. The shower ritual is sacred for most of us. It is the warm, nurturing transition into the mornings, the time and place to reflect and think and it is the relaxing wind-down at the end of the day. The shower is a temple that demands perfection and you shouldn't sully its sacred grounds with sub-par suds bars.
Raise the bar (of soap) and up your shower game. Don't settle for anything but the best. You deserve better.
We got a little off-track there but you get the gist of it, right? Natural, sustainable and high quality is the motto over here and we won't be backing down from that way of life any time soon.
That's our promise to you.
